WASTELAND #45 goes on sale this week.

‘Fatherland’ is one of our ‘interlude’ issues, a stand-alone one-shot featuring guest art from rising star Omar Olivera.

It shines a light on Jakob’s life in Newbegin after Golden Voice’s execution, and leads directly into the following story arc — which is the conclusion to the city’s story in WASTELAND.

In Newbegin, the custom is for men to venerate their fathers. But the last thing Jakob Ofoskorr wants is to look in the mirror and see his own father staring back… Now, with the Sunners facing new dangers and Marcus preparing for an unknown war, can anything drag Jakob out of the doldrums?

Squeee, we can finally share this with the world! (well, I’ll post something later to share with the rest of the world who are still asleep, but for now….YOU GUYS, YES, YOU - CHECK THIS OUT! ^_^)

So, myself, Kate Brown and Paul Duffield have been doing a little work with the Tower of London. Yes, the Tower of London! If you’re half as much of a history nerd as we are, you’ll know how exciting that’s been for us. The scaffolding shown in the photo just went up this week. We chose a few key moments/characters from the Tower’s history for the project. Kate and I illustrated and coloured a few scenes each, while Paul pulled it all together and added design elements with the amazing arches. And the Tower have printed them up onto the scaffolding hoarding. Life sized, baby!

(and yes, all you Richard fans, that there is a life-sized Richard III - just for you <3)

The scaffolding will be up for a good few months. So if you’re planning a visit, enjoy! ^_^

They kept this one bloody quiet. Lovely.

Hey, loves, heads up! Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of blatant knockoffs of a friend of mine’s coats online. Kat is a beautiful soul who has been creating brilliant one-of-a-kind coats, sweaters, dresses, arm and leg warmers out of upcycled sweaters for many, many years. These “elf coats” are her livelihood… not to mention some of the most well-known and well-loved designs on Etsy!

Recently, many others have started making VERY similar coats based off the designs that Kat has painstakingly tooled, tweaked, and personalized over the decades. Many of these copycat designers have jacked up the prices, too. (Kat’s creations aren’t cheap, either, but the quality and love and care she puts into them makes them worth every penny. Each of her pieces is like an ickle wee art baby to her! )

Also, if you’re on a tight budget, as so very many of us are these days, you have the option of gathering up lots of thrifted sweaters in a color/pattern scheme you love and making (or commissioning a friend to make you) your own custom coat by buying one of Kat’s tutorials.

I practically live in my own earthy Katwise elf coat, which Kat named “The Lonely Goat Herd”. (It’s from a collection she created inspired by The Sound of Music.) It’s like wearing armor AND a comforting blanket at the same time! Here is a picture of me blissing out while wearing it on a rainy day with Tane Mahuta, one of the biggest and most ancient trees in the world. And here I am wearing it on another very special day, whispering secrets to a black swan.

These coats are magic. They are art. And it’s late and I’m snuggled up against the cold with The Lonely Goat Herd’s cowl pulled up ‘round my ears, and I just wanted to give the luminous woman who created it a great big happy holler.

If I had to choose a single creature, I suspect I’d choose Talos who I’m amazed I’ve never tried to write into any of my comics. I could have made GIFs of the whole scene, but I’ll go for this gloriously creepy moment.

Develop Awards 2013

Two games I worked on, CSR RACING and ZOMBIU, are both finalists in the 2013 Develop Awards.

CSR RACING is nominated for Visual Arts, which is very well-deserved; when the game was released, it was perhaps second only to INFINITY BLADE in terms of amazing visuals on a goddamn phone. But while I’m delighted to have been involved, obviously the graphics aren’t really anything to do with me.

ZOMBIU, however, is nominated for Use of Narrative, and that’s entirely to do with me and my co-writer Gabrielle Shrager, Ubisoft Montpellier’s Story Design Director. We talked about the game’s use of narrative, and how we approached it, at GDC this year, and if you have a Vault pass, you can watch the session here.

So, yeah. Nothing like an awards nomination to brighten up the morning.

‘The Wreckage of My Flesh’ is the concluding part of the current arc, and signals the beginning of the end — as Michael, Abi, and Thomas are all reunited, and press on to what they hope will be their final destination.

But before that, there are questions to be asked, and clues to be found:

Their long journey through the wasteland is almost over… if Michael, Abi, and Thomas can make it through just one more strange encounter.
